Volume UP with Ismail Einashe: Reflecting on the migrant’s representation in the media

  • About this Volume Up edition
  • In 2015, the world witnessed the largest known migration in modern times to hit the shores of Europe. Looking for new lives elsewhere became the need for people suffering from conflict in Syria, the ongoing violence in Afghanistan and Iraq, abuses in Eritrea, the poverty in Kosovo and Albania, among others.

As 2020 marks five years since the height of the “crisis” in 2015, we delve into the perspectives of how media reports and frames migrants. Joining us for a public talk and a master class will be Ismail Einashe — who currently works as a Senior Journalist at “Lost in Europe,” a project investigating the disappearance of child migrants in Europe. Ismail has also co-edited the book “Lost in Media: Migrant Perspectives and the Public Sphere,” a collection of essays on the representations of migrants and refugees in the European media. He has contributed to BBC News, the Guardian and The Sunday Times, among many others.

Join us for our talk where we will discuss how migrants are represented in the media: Why are migrant perspectives excluded from mainstream media? Who really gets to tell migrants’ stories? Why does the media frame migrants either as victims or as a threat?

Please make sure to register beforehand for the masterclass that will take place right after the public talk. In the masterclass, Ismail will discuss and breakdown how the media reports and frames migrants, while also sharing his reporting experience covering migration.

The talk will be held on June 30, 2020 from 14:00 – 15:00, while the master class will follow from 15:30 -18:00. Please use this link to register for the master class.

The talk will be held on Zoom (streamed on Facebook Live), while the master class will be organized in Zoom as a closed meeting with all registered participants. English and Serbian translation will be provided through Viber groups, so please make sure to message us if you need translation, and we will register you in the respective groups.

This event is implemented through the financial support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Prishtina.
