Darnella Frazier was just 17 when she recorded the murder of George Floyd last year in Minneapolis. Her brave act forced the world to confront racial discrimination, and highlighted “the crucial role of citizens in journalists’ quest for truth and justice,” as the Pulitzer Prize put it when they awarded Frazier a Special Citation earlier this month.
Instances of injustice continue to happen all around us, but it is essential that we do not let them go unnoticed or unseen. As Darnella Frazier showed, photography and videography have the power to change the world.
