Volume UP: Lara Whyte on telling under-reported stories

  • About this Volume Up edition
  • Lara Whyte is not afraid to tell difficult stories.

The award-winning journalist and documentary producer, has talked with Nazis, Kurdish female freedom fighters and Yazidi victims of ISIS rapists. She’s also reported on sectarian violence in her native Northern Ireland.

Now based in London, she thrives on bringing uneasy stories that we sometimes don’t want to hear to the mainstream media — think women of the far right in Eastern Europe and war in Western Africa. Her book on Joanna Palani, the Danish-Kurdish soldier who fought against ISIS, has recently been published.

Not only does she have to think about her own safety and wellbeing while telling these difficult narratives, but she must also be constantly aware of how to protect her (often highly vulnerable) sources. When working with survivors of wars, atrocities and rape, that means constantly mitigating risks.

Now, Whyte — who has worked for the Guardian, ITV and Open Democracy — is bringing those experiences to Kosovo for our next edition of Volume Up. Come and listen to her unique perspective on telling under-reported stories in post-conflict societies and bringing minority voices to the mainstream.

Join us for our talk with Lara Whyte on 30 January 2020, from 17:30, at Hub 2.0. And register for her masterclass here, which will be held on 31 January, from 10:30, at Hub 2.0.
