Volume UP: Khalid Abdel Hadi talks on feminism, gender, body and sexuality in journalism and art today

    For the upcoming edition of Volume UP, K2.0 invites the founder of My.Kali, a webzine dealing with women’s rights, gender & sexuality, art and alternative communities in the Middle East/North Africa region. Khalid Abdel-Hadi is a Jordanian visual artist, model and activist who founded My.Kali magazine at the age of 17; he currently works as its editor-in-chief and creative director.

    Through this magazine, Khalid has managed to address a broader audience and the magazine has become an important voice addressing issues such as gender identity and LGBT community rights. Khalid has thereby become internationally recognized for his impact across the Arab world.

    Khalid has also graduated from several regional and international programs such as of the Swedish Institute’s “Young Leaders Visitors Program (YLVP)” in 2014 and The Arab foundation for Freedom and Equality’s “Social Change Program (SCP)” in 2016.

    He has been involved in the production of a number of reports; he authoredDigital threats and opportunities for LGBT+ activists in Jordanin collaboration with Freedom House, and presented the work at the Internet Governance Forum (GIF) 2016 in Mexico. He has contributed to other international reports, such as Activism and Resilience: LGBTQ Progress in the Arabic-speaking States in the Middle East and North Africa Region” by OutRight (2018) and “Audacity in Adversity: LGBT Activism in the Middle East and North Africa” by Human Rights Watch.

    Khalid participated in the “No Longer Alone” campaign by Human Rights Watch, was listed as one of Guardian’s LGBT change heroes of 2017, and the subject of many artists and journalists from around the world.
