Explained: Unearthing Serbia’s mass graves

By - 02.07.2021

In late 2020, news broke of a grim discovery near Serbia’s border with Kosovo. After years of searching, investigators had found multiple human remains in a remote, disused quarry.

It was suspected that the bodies belonged to Kosovar Albanians, murdered 20 years earlier during the war in Kosovo and buried in a mass grave as part of the orchestrated cover up of the crimes by top Serbian officials.

The discovery at Kiževak was another reminder that — although behind the scenes and rarely seen — the painstaking search for more than 1,600 people still missing from the 1998-99 war goes on.

In our latest video explainer, we explore two decades of efforts to unearth Serbia’s mass graves.K
