On March 23-24 & 30-31, Kosovo 2.0 and GAP Institute invite you to join a tailor-made workshop series and enhance your skills in research and writing on journalists’ rights and media freedom. These workshops are part of a wider series organized within the European Union-funded project “Innovation for resilient media and citizen engagement.”

Why media freedom? 

When we look at the functioning of democracies, the media plays a crucial role in checking on the work of institutions and allowing citizens to take part in the social, cultural and political life of their country. But if the media functions as custodians of democracy, quis custodiet ipsos custodes (who watches the watchers)?

Also, the media is composed of workers — journalists, editors, camera operators, and so on — and whether or not these workers enjoy the rights they are entitled to makes all the difference in the quality of the information they produce, and thus the health of democracy.

While the media often looks at the rest of society, it is essential that the media and media professionals know how to research and report on journalists’ rights and media freedom, promoting the independence, safety and social responsibility of the media sphere itself.

About the workshops

We invite young aspiring journalists, researchers, activists and interested individuals who would like to develop or refine their researching and writing skills on media matters to take part in the workshops.

The workshop series will be split into two components. The first day of each workshop will focus on theoretical approaches to research and data-gathering, while the second day of each workshop will teach you how to transform that research and knowledge into a journalistic article that tells a compelling story.

     1. First workshop, 23-24 March, from 12.00 to 18.00 — Media on Media: journalists’ rights

• Day one: Remzie Shahini-Hoxhaj (Director of University of Prishtina Media Institute)
• Day two: Labinot Leposhtica (Coordinator for Monitoring of Courts and Law Office at BIRN)

     2. Second workshop, 30-31 March, from 10.00 to 16.00 — Media on Media: freedom of the media

• Day one: Jeta Abazi (Lecturer at the University of Prishtina)
• Day two: Arta Avdiu (Editor-in-chief at Dukagjini)

Lunch will be provided to the participants during the workshops. You can choose to participate in both workshops or just one. 

Translation to English and Serbian will be provided for those who require it. The workshops will be held at Hub 2.0 (address: Rruga Ferat Dragaj nr 25, Bregu i Diellit, Prishtina).

A total of 25 people will be selected to participate in each workshop. We will notify everyone about the status of their application through email. The deadline for registration is March 17, 2022.
